If you're like me, you're looking for effective ways to advertise you site using little or no money. Let's face it, we're all just trying to make a little money on the internet and most of us just don't have bundles of cash laying around to spend on advertising (if I had bundles of cash I'd be laying on a beach somewhere). The biggest problem with "FREE" advertising is that it can often be very ineffective. I use the term "FREE" to mean, "not paying cash", problem is, you get what you pay for. In order to achieve EFFECTIVE "FREE" advertising you will have to invest your "time". You see, nothing that is effective is truly free. You will have to invest something. I've placed ads in many "FREE" classifieds and FFA pages that have taken only minutes to set up and have seen virtually no results. I've not invested anything, and have received nothing in return.

Traffic exchanges are a great way to advertise for "FREE". They cost nothing to join and since you a required to invest your time (as are the other members) they are somewhat effective. The problem I have with them is that they are VERRRY BOOORING. After clicking away for hour upon hour, I tend to lose interest in the sites that I'm viewing. So, one would assume that the same is happening to all those people who are viewing my site. Not, to mention that it's just plain boring. Don't get me wrong, I still use traffic exchanges, and will continue to do so. However, let me share with you a more exciting, more effective, "FREE" way to advertise your online opportunities.

Before we continue, you may want to bookmark this site. There's lot's of good information in here that you may want to refer back to once you get started.

I've been a member of It Pays To Learn (IPTL) (you can click it, it'll open in a new window) for several months now. This site has a system set up where you can earn "FREE" banner ads on their site by taking quizzes. The quizzes are extremely entertaining to take, and can be taken at any time. Once you have earned enough credits, called QuizBucks, you can cash them in for banner ads to be run on their site. Even if you don't have your own banners, you have the option of creating a text banner that can be displayed. It Pays To Learn has a huge member base and all ads can be targeted by interest. Your banner ads will be displayed while members are having fun taking Quizzes, or navigating other parts of the site, so they will not be bored or irritated when they see your opportunity. Every time I have run banner ads on this site, I have received new sign-ups for my opportunities. The really exciting part is that you can also earn CASH and additional QuizBucks, not only through your own efforts, but also through the efforts of your referrals. All without the boredom of just mindlessly clicking from page to page.

This next section will walk you through getting started with It Pays To Learn and provide you with some tips and advice, to help you make the most of your IPTL membership. I'll give you advice as to how to generate tons of QuizBucks, which can be used not only for purchasing banner ads, but for "V-mail" ads (even more effective than banners), upgrades, discounts or they can be sold for cash. I'll tell you how to earn cash and give you some advice on building a referral network (you can actually buy referrals if you choose - discussed later).

INTRODUCTION TO "IT PAYS TO LEARN"

If you don't have a PayPal Account, you will want to get one.
It Pays To Learn pays with PayPal, you can also receive a check, but PayPal is much faster and easier. If you don't have an account you can get one here PayPal. It's fast, easy and free.

Sign up for It Pays To Learn (IPTL)
If you haven't already, sign up for It Pays To Learn. Simply click on the link and sign up. You'll find the signup link under "Join Free" on the left hand side of the screen. Once you've signed up, you will be sent a Welcome email, which will contain your username, password and referral link. Make sure you save this email in a safe place.

Login and Explore
If you are not at the Login page already, you can either click on the IPTL link above, or the referral link in your welcome email. Once at the login page, bookmark it in your favorites. Login. You will see all of the site navigation links down the left hand side of the screen. You should familiarize yourself with all of these links, below is an outline of the most important, as well as what you should do with each one to make the most of your IPTL membership.

The first link you will want to click is the "Confirm PayPal" link. This is to confirm that you have a valid PayPal account. What you will be doing, is sending IPTL 1 cent. Once they have recieved the 1 cent and confirmed your PayPal account, they will refund your 1 cent and credit your account with 25 cents. If you have just opened your PayPal account and do not have 1 cent in it, read through the following steps to see how you can earn some PayPal cash with IPTL, then confirm your PayPal account as soon as you have accumulated some cash.

CashBank - This is where you can check how much cash you've earned for the month. It will show your earnings broken down into all of the categories for which you can earn cash on IPTL. If you scroll down a bit, you'll see payment options (red bold letters), choose whether you want to be paid as soon as your account contains $1.00 (minimum payout) or if you'd like for IPTL to hold your earnings and let them grow. When you first start out you may wish to have them pay you immediately, that way you will receive payment notices from PayPal as soon as they pay you (I found the notices quite exciting when I first signed up).
QuizBucks - These are what you'll want to rack up for advertising. You earn these for taking the quizzes. This is not real money, however they can be sold for real money and can be used not only for advertising but upgrade your account, purchase discounts at participating merchant stores and more.
QuizStats - This just shows your statistics for taking quizzes. Not relevant for earning cash, but fun to check out nonetheless.
Take Quizzes - This is where you can take quizzes to earn QuizBucks. These do not generate cash directly, however as stated earlier, QuizBucks can be used for other things on the IPTL website. Look under "Spend QuizBucks" to find out more. You can also look under "Sell QuizBucks" to see how they can be sold for cash. As a free member, you will want to make sure and generate at least 500 QuizPoints per month to qualify for the extra QuizPoints bonus from your referrals. If you upgrade to a Gold Member (discussed later) you will want to rack up at least 5,000 QuizPoints per month. You will also earn cash for quizzes taken by your referrals. I know QuizBucks may not seem like much, but over time you will be able to generate a large number of QuizBucks, which can in turn be sold for cash.
Read V-mail Ads - This is where IPTL makes its money. Companies advertise their offers in hopes that you'll signup for them. In return IPTL will PAY you to read them. Make sure that you read these. You can usually rack up a dollar or two in a month just from reading your V-mail. I know this does not seem like much, but you can use these earnings to pay for your Gold membership, help pay for your own V-Mail ads or to buy AADRs (all discussed later). Also, many of the offers are pretty good. Some will offer over $5 just for you to sign up for a FREE trial service. There will be other offers that you may want to accept anyway; for example, Columbia House often advertises here, if you were planning on joining them anyway, or are interested in doing so, IPTL will pay you over $8.00 to sign up with them. We do not recommend that you sign up for offers that you are not genuinely interested in, please read IPTL's policies regarding accepting offers. You also get paid cash for any of your direct referrals that accept offers from IPTL.
Accept Offers - Pretty much the same as the V-mails, except you don't get paid for viewing the offers, only if you accept them.
Gold Membership - You can gain additional benefits from upgrading to a Gold membership. You will receive additional QuizBucks and additional cash for upgrading - be sure to read through the Gold Membership section to understand the additional benefits. Gold membership costs around $15.00 for 6 months, and is not mandatory to earn on IPTL but I would highly recommend it. If you are a bit weary about upgrading, wait until you have earned enough to cover the payment, you can easily do that by accepting a few offers and reading the V-mail. Once you start building your referrals, Gold Membership will be very beneficial.
Guaranteed AADRs - This is where you can buy Direct Referrals. They are quite expensive to buy, but if you can afford them I would recommend purchasing AADR's. They will earn you both cash and can generate tons of QuizBucks for you. If you are thinking of ordering AADR's, you may not want to just jump right in, IPTL will frequently run 2 for 1 specials. This is when I buy my AADR's. AADR's have additional benefits than regular referrals, so again, be sure to read through the AADR section on the site. If you don't want to purchase AADR's right away, that's OK, I'm going to let you copy this site, so you can start building your own referrals.
Gold Plus - This is an upgrade that you can purchase using you QuizBucks. It will multiply the QuizBucks that you have earned by a certain percentage, up to doubling them. Once you are earning a lot of QuizBucks, this is something you will definitely want to look into. You may even want to purchase some QuizBucks to upgrade if you are a Gold member. Gold Plus is a lifetime upgrade, meaning that even if you let your Gold Membership lapse, once up renew your Gold membership, your Gold Plus multiplier will still be in place. As mentioned above, QuizBucks can be used to run banner advertisements on IPTL (including the traffic generation portion of this system), or other sites you wish to advertise, or sold for cash. If you follow this system, you should be able to generate a significant amount of QuizBucks that can be sold for cash.
Explore the rest of the features on IPTL - That's about it for the majority of the site. I encourage you to explore the rest of the site. You really can earn some recurring, extra cash every month using IPTL. You just need to put in the time.

Now that you're familiar with It Pays to Learn, allow me to share some advice.
First the basics:

Take lots of quizzes and rack up as many QuizBucks as possible. Your can start purchasing Banner Ads once you have $15.00 in QuizBucks. You can also save the QuizBucks to purchase Gold Plus upgrades or pay for 50% of your own V-mail ads.
Login often and read your V-mail. You can earn a few bucks just by reading the V-mail and you can earn even more by accepting the offers in them. Be sure to look for those offers that pay cash for signing up for free trials. You'll want to check them often because these are purchased per view. So once they are viewed "x" amount of times they are gone. Just because you have 10 V-mails to read one day, does not mean that you will have the same 10 the next.
Upgrade to Gold status as soon as you can, especially if you have referrals. Gold status will allow you to generate cash and QuizBucks from your referrals, as well as allow you to take advantage of Gold Plus.
Upgrade to Gold Plus 100 as soon as you can. Gold Plus adds a percentage of QuizPoints to your account for taking quizzes. For example, if you've upgraded to Gold Plus 20, for every 100 QuizPoints you earn you would get an extra 20 added to your account. You will need to earn 5,000 QuizPoints per month in order to get your Gold Plus Bonus. Gold Plus is purchased using QuizBucks. It takes 100 QuizBucks per level of 10. Since when you are first starting out, it is more difficult to generate tons of QuizBucks, you may want to consider purchasing QuizBucks. This will speed thing up considerably. Once you are at Gold Plus 100 level it's much easier to start generating a substantial amount of QuizBucks.
The easiest and most effective way to generate both QuizBucks and Cash is through referrals. The easiest and fastest way to get referrals is to buy AADR's. Now, buying referrals is expensive. However, for each AADR you get 5 QuizPoints per day, guaranteed, as long as you have generated 500 QuizPoints on your own. You will also get paid cash when your referrals take quizzes, accept offers, upgrade to gold and confirm their PayPal account. The referrals will pay for themselves over time. I generate enough QuizBucks and cash, just through my referrals, to run tons of Banner Ads, run at least one V-mail ad per month, pay for my gold membership still have extra cash left over. It takes a bit of time to build up your referral base, but it's worth it in the long run. And don't forget, if you aren't using all of you QuizBucks, you can sell them for cash.
Now, I realize some of the options above cost money. So, start off slow. Remain a free member until you have generated enough cash by reading V-mails and accepting offers to pay for your Gold Membership. You should be able to do this quite easily. Remember to look for the offers, that you are interested in, that will pay you cash to sign up for a free trial. Keep taking Quizzes, reading V-mails and accepting offers. Once you have a good feel for everything, start reinvesting you earnings in upgrades and AADR's, or just purchase them once you're comfortable doing so.

Next, Running Ads:

Run Banner Ads. Once you have earned $15.00 in QuizBucks you can run a banner ad campaign. You get to choose your target audience. Many affiliate or referral sites offer banners taht you can use. If you don't have a banner, there is a section for you to create a text banner or you can create your own banner if you are able. If you don't have a clue as to how to make a banner you can try this program Banner Maker Pro. This is only a 15 day trial, but it's super easy to use and you should be able to create several banners before the trial runs out. After a while $15.00 in QuizBucks will be very easy to come by. You will find that the banner ads are pretty effective; I usually get several sign-ups every time I run banner ads.
Run V-Mail Ads. V-Mail ads are VERY effective. Of course they're also more expensive. You can only pay for 50% of their cost with your QuizBucks; the other 50% needs to be cash. Again, after a while you should be able to make enough in both cash and QuizBucks to pay for some V-mail ads. V-mail ads are by far one of the most effective forms of advertising that I've found. People actually look at your ad, because they are paid to do so. I've had click through rates of over 25% when running V-mails. It Pays to Learn provides up to the minute statistics for both V-mail ads and banner ads, so you can track their effectiveness.

Now start doing your own referring. Send an email to all of your friends. Your referral link will be in your welcome email and can also be found under "Send referral email" on IPTL. You can also duplicate this site and replace my referral links with yours. You'll find a small link at the bottom of the page. This is a link to the developer of this system, it is not mandatory that you leave this link, but it would be appreciated. Once you have duplicated this site, you will find some suggestions as to how to get some traffic to it. The heading of the page is intended to have appeal to people using traffic exchanges, so I would highly recommend checking out the traffic exchange system toward the bottom of the page (it's also a duplicateable system). DUPLICATING THIS WEBSITE
If you know how to copy this website and update this site with your links, simply update the IPTL signup link and the email links and upload to your webspace. As long as you have signed up for IPTL under my referral link, you have full permission to duplicate this site. Then skip ahead to the Traffic Generation portion of this site to maximize your IPTL earnings.

If you've never created your own Website before, this is my attempt to walk you through it.

First, I would recommend downloading this program (don't worry it's FREE): Xoology Coda. This is an HTML editor that will make it easier for you to find the links that you'll need to update. It will color code the HTML for this site and make it easier for you to modify this site with your links.
If you're not here already, open this page in your browser. Go up to "File" - "Save As" and save this page as type "Web Page, HTML only" and name it "iptl.html". Make sure you remember where you saved it. This will be YOUR web page when you're finished.
Next, go to the logo at the top of the page (the one that says free effective advertising), right click it and choose "Save Picture As" and save it in the same folder that you saved the web page in, leave it named FreeEffective. The picture and the web page MUST be in the same folder or you won't see the logo on your page
Get your new website address (URL) that you will use for YOUR duplication of this site. I'm having you do this step now because you'll need the URL (website address) before modifying the links in this page. Many Internet Service Providers offer webspace to their customers for free. If this is the case, consult you ISPs website, or call them, as to what you web address is and the best way to upload your website. Simply follow their instructions and then make sure to test the URL. Type the URL into the address bar in your browser and make sure your page comes up. Once it does, I would recommend adding your site to your favorites. This is by far the best way to go if you don't already have a website, because your ISP will not put ads on your page.
If you don't have webspace already here's a good site that lists a ton of FREE web-hosts: Free-Webhosts. If you are looking to purchase some webspace, here is a good one that I would recommend: Aplus There are many others out there, so if you like something else, go for it. Once you get signed up for your webspace, explore the providers' site. You should now have a web address (URL) and a login or admin page. Add them both to your bookmarks. Your URL should look something like this (I'll use Free Web Page as an example) "http://yourusername.freewebpage.org/". If you go to that page you should have a default page that was set up by the provider.
Now open Coda, if you're using it. Once started, open the file you just saved (iptl.html) by going to, "File" - "Open File" and going to your file. You should now see the HTML code for the file you just saved. If using coda, green text will be a comment, red text will be a link (URL), blue will be a command and black text will simply be text that is displayed on a browser. If you are not using Coda, you can find the HTML code by opening this file in you browser and going to "View" - "Source" in your browser window.
Now, while still in Coda go to the top of the page. Right toward the top and also just before the end of the heading you will see a line of green text that says "REPLACE MY LINK WITH THE URL FROM YOUR SITE". Just below it you will see the link for MY IPTL system web site that is the URL for this page. Replace this link with the website address (URL) that you just setup. You can either type it in or copy it from the Welcome email from the provider you chose, or open it up in your browser and copy it from the address bar. You will then need to add "/iptl.html" to the end of the URL. So, when you are complete (I'll use the Free Web Page example I used before), the link that you have entered (dark red) should look something like this: "http://yourusername.freewebpage.org/iptl.html" Make sure you leave the quotes on each end and leave the TARGET="_blank" on the end.
You'll notice as you scroll down the page, that there are multiple lines of green text. These are comments I've added to help you navigate through the HTML and will help you customize the page should you choose to do so.
The next links you will want to replace are my It Pays To Learn referral links. Scroll down from the top until you see the green lines that say "REPLACE MY IPTL REFERRAL LINK WITH YOURS". There will be 3 of them in close proximity to each other. Replace my referral link with yours. You can find your referral link in your Welcome email or under "Send Referral Email" on IPTL.
The next link you will want to modify is the first email link. Scroll down the page until you see another green line of text that reads "REPLACE MY EMAIL WITH YOURS". Type in your email address over top of mine, in between the colon and the question mark. Be sure to leave everything before and including the colon and after and including the question mark.
The next link to replace is the PayPal link. It's just a few lines down from the email link. If you don't have a PayPal referral link, just leave this as is.
A few lines down from that you will see another IPTL link. The green comment will read "REPLACE MY IPTL LINK WITH YOURS". Go to your IPTL Welcome email and copy your referral link. Paste it over top of mine in Coda. Be sure to leave the quotes on either end of the link and the TARGET="_blank" on the end.
After that is another email link, replace as before.
At the bottom, under the "Ideas for Promoting Your Site" section, you will find a link for the traffic exchange system and a paid email system. If you have duplicated either of these, replace my links with yours.
Save your changes!

Upload your site to your webspace.
You are now ready to post your new web page to the Internet. If you have webspace through your ISP, please refer to their instructions for uploading your site. You need to upload both the webpage AND the logo. If you are using one of the free sites listed above, there should be basically two ways for you to upload your site.

First, they should have a file manager, or upload manager of some sort or a file upload section. This is my preferred method. You'll be able to go into their upload section, browse your computer and choose the file you want to upload. If using this method, go ahead and upload your "iptl.html" file.
The second method is that they will have an HTML editor of sorts where you can directly enter HTML. In this case you will need to Copy all of the HTML code for your IPTL site and paste it into the HTML editor. Make sure you save it as "iptl.html".

Now that you have your site uploaded, you'll want to test it. Open your browser and go to your URL. If you still see the default page set up by the webspace provider, go to the address bar and add "/iptl.html" to the end of the address and hit enter or go. Still using the Free Web Space example as before, the website address (URL) of your new site should be "http://yourusername.freewebpage.org/iptl.html". This is the link that you'll want to advertise for your IPTL system, bookmark it.

Test all of your links.
Click on every link on your site and make sure they work. Be sure that the IPTL sign up link contains your IPTL ID number.

CONGRATULATIONS
You now have a fully functional website that you can use to refer people to YOUR IPTL system. Give your URL to your friends and have them sign up. Another good idea is to add an email signature to all of your outgoing email with your URL in it. There are many ways to advertise for free. Free classifieds, message boards, you can hang or hand out paper flyers or anything else you may come up with.

Here are a few other recommendations for your new website.

Customize your page. Try changing the heading or adding your own wording. If you'd like some more information on HTML, here is a good site that will give you some basics PageTutor. Alternately you can find some other useful tools HERE.
If you look at your page in Coda, towards the top you'll see a spot to add advertising of your own. It will be displayed down the left hand side of the screen. Add links to any other opportunities you may have. Once you finish the Traffic Generating portion of this system, be sure to add a link for it.

Ideas for Promoting Your Site

Refer friends and family. This is the most effective way to start out. Send out an email telling your friends and family about taking online surveys. Be sure to include your website address.
Traffic Exchanges. This is the easiest way to generate enough traffic to meet the traffic requirements of an ad network. It's also a great way to get some referrals. Here is a great little Traffic Exchange System that will recommend some good traffic exchanges, as well as, show you how to surf multiple exchanges at once to get thousands of hits.
Use message boards and forums. There are tons of message boards and forums out there, post a message and include a link to your website.
Add a signature to your email with your website address. Most email programs will allow you to add a signature to ALL outgoing email.
Banner Exchanges. There are many banner exchanges out there, they are not extremely effective but they are usually free.
Paid to Read email sites. If you happen to be a member of PTR email sites, you can usually run quite a few ads by either using points or by using some of the money you've earned by reading email.
Offline Advertising. You can hand out flyers, look for community bulletin boards or make business cards to hand out.
Free Online Classified Ads. These don't work terribly well, but again they are free.
